challenge was to come up with ideas for a simple, energy efficient home on an urban infill site.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EXISTING CONDITIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The site lies just outside the downtown core of a northwest US city.\u00a0 The site is 40 x 100 feet, long axis of the site east-west.\u00a0 The rear of the site has alley access.\u00a0 Any concept would only need to allow space for a two car garage with alley access however would not have to include the garage in the design.\u00a0 The main street runs north south on the west side of the property.<\/p>\n<p><!--more Click to read more about Urban Infill Small House...--><\/p>\n<p><strong>PROPOSED CONCEPT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The living space will need to be under 1,000 square feet.\u00a0 Sustainable design should drive any concepts proposed.\u00a0 Connections to the outdoors are important, both for visual connection and for opportunity to move social events outdoors easily.<\/p>\n<p>DESIGNlinkup decided to work within the confines of a rectangle to help reduce construction costs.\u00a0 Since the long dimension of the site faces north and south, the opportunity to utilize photovoltaics on the roof.\u00a0 Our concept places the home on north side of the site to allow for garden space on the south side of the lot.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_188\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-188\" style=\"width: the first floor above the living and dining rooms.\u00a0 This allows for visual connections between the first and second floor.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_220\" concept with the living space being placed on the south side of the home to provide visual connections to the yard and allow for direct sunlight to enter the space during colder winter months.\u00a0 Support functions line the north side (staircase, small restroom, and laundry room).<\/p>\n<p>The two bedrooms upstairs act as separate suites as they both have designated bathrooms.<\/p>\n<figure visual connection to the living room, dining room, and kitchen beyond.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The choice of materials emphasizes the notion of a external shell and the internal components.
