{"id":570,"date":"2013-11-24T08:20:59","date_gmt":"2013-11-24T08:20:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/?p=570"},"modified":"2013-11-25T20:13:02","modified_gmt":"2013-11-25T20:13:02","slug":"off-the-grid-in-washington-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/?p=570","title":{"rendered":"Off the grid in Washington, Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<address>Project Type: New Construction<br \/>\nLocation: Okanogan County, Washington<\/address>\n<p>The purpose of this project is to explore residential options for land east of the Cascade Mountains just south of the Canadian border in Washington State.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Geography and Climate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The geography as you can see below is low rolling hills with occasional groupings of evergreen trees. This area is fairly high, at about 3,500 feet (1,066 meters).\u00a0 Although this area gets far less rain than on average for the US,\u00a0there is significant snow accumulation.\u00a0 This is a net heating climate, as there are approximately 7,400 heating degree days and 372 cooling degree days per year.\u00a0\u00a0 The mountains to the west play a large role in defining the climate.\u00a0 Mountains in the western United States tend to block cloud formation moving east off of the Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 Also, the topographical affects during warm months drive the formation of thunderstorms which lead to some precipitation and raise the potential for wildfires.\u00a0 Cold Canada to the North influences the weather in the winter by partnering up with the Cascade Mountains and funneling cold weather south across this region.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-04-04-06.53.57.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-572\" alt=\"2013-04-04 06.53.57\" src=\"https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-04-04-06.53.57.jpg\" width=\"8191\" height=\"1168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-04-04-06.53.57.jpg 8191w, https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-04-04-06.53.57-300x42.jpg 300w, https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-04-04-06.53.57-1024x146.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more Click to read more about Off the grid in Washington, Part 1...--><br \/>\n<strong>Building Siting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Site access is from the dirt road on the west boundary of the site.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left\" alt=\"site\" src=\"https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/eastern-wa\/site.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are two locations being considered for the structure on this site.\u00a0 The first is deep into the site, near a pond. Since wildlife gather at the pond, the client would like to view the activity from a porch.\u00a0 At the same time, the client would like to be able to view the Cascades.\u00a0 The downside to this location is the lack of proximity to the road.<\/p>\n<p>The second location being considered is located closer to the road up on a small hill, electricity, and the well, but is visually shielded from the pond.\u00a0 The view of the Cascades is better.\u00a0 The proximity to electricity may be not important as the client intends to be disconnected from the commercial power source.<\/p>\n<p><em>The concept below places the structure at site 1.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Utilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is\u00a0 a well on the site for water.\u00a0 Perhaps have a gray water system.<\/p>\n<p>No septic.\u00a0 Interested in using composing toilets. Minimize water use.<\/p>\n<p>Not interested in using municipal power.\u00a0 Hopes to be off the grid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Program<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The client is considering\u00a0a 900 to\u00a01,000 sq ft structure incorporating a bed and breakfast function.\u00a0 The bed and breakfast function would include a &#8220;family room&#8221; space with a restroom and two very small sleeping rooms adjacent to the family room.\u00a0 Loft spaces are imagined offering additional\u00a0sleeping space.<\/p>\n<p>This bed and breakfast function would be linked to the main living space.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a preference for sliding doors between spaces which would allow for multipurpose spaces.\u00a0 It is imagined that a loft space atop storage and a restroom would account for the sleeping space; no bedrooms required.\u00a0 A large fireplace and porches are desired.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materiality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>High on the list of preferences are open, bright, light filled spaces.\u00a0\u00a0 Client envisions white walls with reclaimed wood floors and exposed wood structure above.\u00a0 Exterior to the building the client would like natural aesthetic, but considering the potential vulnerability to wildfires, wood siding may not be appropriate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Initial Concepts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The purpose of this post is to establish the site conditions and to identify spacial relationships and requirements.\u00a0 We take a stab at a concept here.\u00a0 The renderings do not indicate an intention of finality, rather an attempt to give the client an opportunity to respond to an aesthetic and to the volume related to the two potential layouts below and give us all something to discuss.\u00a0\u00a0 We&#8217;d love any and all feedback.. this is a long way from being finished and we&#8217;re excited to test a wide array of ideas.\u00a0 We have no allegiance to any concept.<\/p>\n<p>Both of the concepts are rotated 45 degrees off an east-west axis to maintain desired views from main rooms (pond to the east, mountains to the west) as well as maintain a partial southern exposure to maintain control of direct glare.\u00a0 The first simplified layout below lines the NW edge of the house with utilitarian spaces.\u00a0 The rest of the building remains largely open allowing for flexibility with the exception of the sliding doors separating the bed and breakfast function from the rest of the house.\u00a0 It is imagined that access for guests could be separate from the main entrance-through the sliding doors on the south side of the building.\u00a0 Perhaps the client would prefer a joint entrance.\u00a0 This needs to be discussed.<\/p>\n<p>Massing-wise, both layouts are the same.\u00a0 Two side-by-side rectangular forms linked by a transitional space.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left\" alt=\"wa01\" src=\"https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/eastern-wa\/wa01.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This second concept is slightly different from the first.\u00a0 The storage and restroom function are rotated off the northwest edge of the house and placed in the center of the building separating the living space from the dining space. We test this concept in the renderings below to see how this feels.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left\" alt=\"wa02\" src=\"https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/eastern-wa\/wa02.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a series of quick renderings.\u00a0 First, here is an overhead view: one block with butterfly roof, other block with shed roof.\u00a0 Skylights along north edge of shed roof.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left\" alt=\"roof01\" src=\"https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/eastern-wa\/roof01.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Two covered porches, one for the bed and breakfast (also serves as a covered entry porch) and one for the main house.\u00a0 Siding and roof imagined to be seamed metal as this kind of exterior finish serves several purposes (durable, readily available, relatively inexpensive, fire resistant, and is suitable for rainwater collection).\u00a0 However, through discussion we question whether a butterfly roof is appropriate in this climate due to presence of snow throughout the winter months.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left\" alt=\"ext01base01\" src=\"https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/eastern-wa\/ext01base01.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We will first take a look at the mass that contains the main living block.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a section through the building.\u00a0 We chose a shed roof to allow controlled daylight to enter the space through clerestories from the south.\u00a0 A low roof shelters the porch from the elements and prevents direct daylight from entering through the glass in the sliding doors.\u00a0 Behind the fireplace and over the centrally placed restroom and storage is a loft sleeping space accessed by the ladder seen in the section.\u00a0 The front door is seen on the left side of the image.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left\" alt=\"section02\" src=\"https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/eastern-wa\/section02.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A view from the transition space looking into the living room.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left\" alt=\"idea01_interior06_base\" src=\"https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/eastern-wa\/idea01_interior06_base.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a view looking back at the living room.\u00a0 Front door to the right, bed and breakfast space beyond:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left\" alt=\"idea01_interior03\" src=\"https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/eastern-wa\/idea01_interior03.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A view from the loft:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left\" alt=\"idea01_interior04_base\" src=\"https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/eastern-wa\/idea01_interior04_base.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now we&#8217;ll take a look on the other side of the central mass at the kitchen and dining area.\u00a0 This space is over-sized for the needs of the client.\u00a0 A full table is really not necessary.\u00a0 Space is only needed for a fold town table and chairs.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll revisit this in the next round of exploration.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left\" alt=\"idea01_interior07\" src=\"https:\/\/designlinkup.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/eastern-wa\/idea01_interior07.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Turning around 180 degrees we have this view.\u00a0 Completely generic cabinets at this point..
